A jack-o'-lantern is usually a carved pumpkin. It is associated chiefly with the holiday of Halloween named after the phenomenon of unusual light flashing over ignis fatuus or jack-o'-lantern.

Top is cut off, and  flesh is taken out from the inside of pumpkin. Usually a frightful face, is carved onto the surface, and the lid replaced. At night, a light is fitted  inside to bright up.
