1st January is the first day of New Year. It is also known as St. Basil's Day. St Basil was one the forefathers of the Greek Orthodox Church. He is remembered for his kindness and generosity to the poor. It is believed that he died on this date.

In Greece it is the custom to exchange gifts on the New Year instead of Christmas. It is very common in Greece that people gather in town center or plaza to enjoying last moments. Teenagers have their own of way.
