   The birth of SIM University took more than 12 years of meticulous planning and preparation.  The seeds were first sown in 1992 when the Ministry of Education (MOE) appointed the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) to collaborate with The Open University of the United Kingdom (OUUK).
   
   They jointly offered the Open University Degree Programme (OUDP), and the first intake of students numbered 900. They had only three degree programmes to choose from.
   
   In 2002, the OUDP was granted accreditation status by OUUK and renamed SIM Open University Centre (SIM-OUC).  With accreditation, SIM-OUC enjoyed greater flexibility in designing and directing its academic programmes.  It also began an internal restructuring process in preparation for achieving its vision of becoming a full-fledged university.
   
   On April 14, 2005, that vision was realised when MOE granted SIM the approval to form SIM University – Singapore’s first privately-funded university - in January 2005. With its founding, UniSIM assumed direct responsibility for SIM-OUC’s enrolment.
     
   In 2006, His Excellency, Mr S R Nathan, President of the Republic of Singapore accepted the invitation to be UniSIM’s patron.
   
   In 2007, all UniSIM degree programmes current at the time were approved by MOE as a means for non-graduate teachers to upgrade their qualifications.
   
   Eligible adult Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents at UniSIM  enjoy up to 40% financial subsidy from the Singapore government for pursuing their degree programmes as part of their continuing education and training. With this subsidy, UniSIM is able to make tertiary education even more accessible to our adult learners.
   
   UniSIM has grown to be the preferred choice for adult learners. That is because we stay true to our vision of serving society through excellence in flexible learning for adults.
