It is very much likely that the Eid al-Fitr in 2010 will be on Thursday, the 9th of September. However, it is as always based on sight ability in North America; in 2010 Eid al-Fitr will start in North America a day later - on Friday, the 10th of September. It should be noted that in the Muslim calendar, a holiday begins on the sunset of the previous day, so the Muslims observing that very calendar will celebrate Eid al-Fitr on the sunset of Wednesday, the 8th of September. Usually Eid al-Fitr is very much on the same day of the Islamic calendar, which is the date on the Gregorian calendar, varies from year to year, considering that the Gregorian calendar is a solar calendar and the Islamic calendar is a lunar. This difference means Eid al-Fitr moves in the Gregorian calendar approximately 11 days every year. The date of Eid al-Fitr may also vary from country to country depending on whether the moon has been sighted or not. The dates provided here are based on the dates adopted by the Fiqh Council of North America for the celebration of Eid al-Fitr. Nevertheless, these dates are based on astronomical calculations to verify each date, and not on the actual sighting of the moon with the naked eyes. This approach is accepted by many, but is still being hotly debated.
