Honda's original compact hybrid strategy principles a gasoline engine as the main origin of energy with an electrical powered motor providing energy assist as needed, making in dramatic fuel economies and dampened emissions. Providing potent energy assist at lower speeds, Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) joins Honda's newly developed 4-cylinder, 16-valve, and 1.5-liter I-VTEC engine. Together, they provide maximum torque at 1,000 - 1,500 rpm and strain-free acceleration on into the high rpm range. In combination with the CR-Z's light body, this energy train produces the acceleration feel of a 2.0-liter gasoline engine, whereas intending dramatic fuel economies of 25 km/L.

At dampened speeds, the 1.5-liter, 16-valve engine features idles one of its pair intake valves. The consequence is ample energy combined with boosted fuel economies and emissions performance. Thanks to idle stop capacity, the engine automatically stops as shortly as the car stops at a traffic signal or in a traffic jam.

The engine has a dampened height, allowing for a dampened hood and dampened overall car height. The intake chamber and atmosphere cleaner shell are flat and follow the queues of the hood, and other elements have been prepared as compact as possible. As a consequence, the 1.5-liter engine of the CR-Z is almost as dampened in height as the 1.3-liter engine of the 2009 Insight.
