    The Toyota Celica name  has been applied to a series of different types of coupes which were made by the company Toyota. The name is ultimately derived from the Latin word coelica which means “heavenly" or "celestial".

    Throughout its life span the Celica has been powered by different types of four cylinder engines. The most significant changes of these occurred in the August 1985, when the car's drive layout was changed from the rear wheel drive to the front wheel drive. During the first three generations, American market Celicas were powered by different versions of Toyota's R series engines. The four-wheel drive turbocharged model that designated All-trac in the United States or GT-four that was produced from the year 1986 to 1999. Variable Valve Timing came in the year 1997 of Japanese models, and became standard in all of the models from 2000 on. Through all the seven generations, the model has gone through many revisions and changes in design forks, including the Toyota Celica Supra which is known as Toyota Supra. The Celica was available both as the notchback and liftback coupes, as well as the convertible.


    In the year 1999, Toyota began the production and sales of its seventh generation Celica. It closely resembles to the XYR concept with the exception of front bumper and the rear spoiler. The 2000 model of year Celica was the element of Toyota Project Genesis, the effort to bring younger buyers in the marque of United States.

    The Celica came in two models. The ZZT230 was powered by the relatively economical 1.8 L 4-cylinder 140 hp, 1ZZ-FE engine and the ZZT231 which was powered by the higher-performance 1.8 L 4-cylinder 190 hp, it was co-developed with the name Yamaha.

    The last Celica  rolled off production line on the April 21, 2006. In its last year, the Celica was the only officially sold in Japan.
