Yuri Gagarin, a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut, was the first human being to travel into space, and the first to orbit the earth on April 12, 1961.

His journey into the space made the Gagarin an international celebrity.  He was awarded many medals and honors. He was honored as the Hero of the Soviet Union which is the highest honor of the Soviet Unions.  Gagarin later appointed as deputy training director of the Cosmonaut Training Centre which is located outside Moscow, and got his name after his death.

Gagarin recalled his experience to travel into space, having been the first human in space:

“The feeling of weightlessness was somewhat unfamiliar compared with Earth conditions. Here, you feel as if you were hanging in a horizontal position in straps. You feel as if you are suspended”.

After the flight, Gagarin discussed with the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev that during reentry he had whistled the tune "The Motherland Hears, The Motherland Knows".  The first two lines of the song are: "The Motherland hears, the Motherland knows/Where her son flies in the sky". This patriotic song was written by Dmitri Shostakovich in 1951.

Aside from his short height at 5 ft 2 inches (1m 57cm), one of the most notable habits of Gagarin was his smile. It was the main point of discussion among many people that how Gagarin's smile gained the attention of many in the crowd who frequently tours Gagarin did in the months after the success of Vostok 1 mission.

Gagarin also gathered a reputation as an adept public figure. During his tour to Manchester in the United Kingdom, in spite of raining, Gagarin insisted that the car hood remain back so that the cheering crowds could catch a glimpse of him. Gagarin stated, "If all these people have turned out to welcome me and can stand in the rain, so can I." Gagarin refused an umbrella and remained standing in his open-top Bentley so that the cheering crowds could still see him. Gagarin denied to get an umbrella and stayed standing in his open-top Bentley so that the cheering crowds could still glimpse him.

Gagrin died in a MiG-15UTI crash near the town of Kirzhachon during his routine training flight from Chkalovsky Air Base on 27 March 1968.
