Writing a speech for student government is no different from writing a persuasive essay for an English composition class. When delivering a speech of this nature, the purpose is to persuade the listener to think, feel, believe or act in a specific way. Generally, this is to vote for the person making the speech or for his policy proposal. The format of the speech should take the order of explaining what the listener should do, giving the reasons for doing it and reiterating the desired action. Write an introduction that includes a general opening remark, the action statement and a list of the reasons for why the listen should do what you want her to do. The opening statement should catch the listener's attention without being overly clever. A question or an anecdote makes an effective opener. Conclude the speech by repeating the desired action and the reasons for taking that action, followed by a general concluding remark.
