In India, an Indian, Non Resident Indian (NRI), or a foreign citizen can easily adopt a child. There are special guidelines and documentation for each category of prospective adoptive parents. A single female or a married couple can adopt a kid. In India, a single male is normally not applicable to be an adoptive parent. A single man wishing to adopt a kid may be considerable if he applies through a registered organization. But in this case he will only adopt a male child.

There are some conditions for adoptive parents that they should be medically fit and financially eligible to look after for a child. A person wants to adopt a child must be at least 21 years old. There is no legal upper age limit for parents but many adoptive agencies set their own benchmarks associated with age. For a kid who is less than a year old, the adoptive parents can have a maximum collective age of 90 years. Also, neither parent must be older than 45 years. In the situation of adoption of older children, the age of the parents may be adjusted accordingly. For instance, for a one-year-old child, the age requirement is 46 years, for a two-year-old child, it is 47 years and so on. The upper age criteria for an adopted child is 12 years while for an adoptive parent it is 55 years. But in the case of an adopted child with special requirements, the age limit may be relaxed slightly by the state government, depending on the situation of the case, although in all situations, the age of the parent cannot exceed 55 years.
